TL;DR

  • Samsung expects its foundry customer count to quadruple by 2029 compared with 2017 levels, after already tripling since becoming an independent unit in 2017.
  • The company is shifting its foundry mix from mobile toward AI and high-performance computing, which rose from 5% in 2017 to 28% and could reach 66% by 2029.
  • Samsung plans mass production of its third-generation 2nm process in 2028 and its 1.4nm process in 2029.

After burning through a lot of cash for a few years, Samsung's foundry has recently turned over a new leaf, as it's been able to win new customers for semiconductor manufacturing on advanced nodes.

The company is confident that this trend will continue in the coming years, as it now expects that its foundry customers will quadruple by 2029.

High-performance computing will make up the build of its foundry business

Noh Mi-jung, a senior vice president at Samsung's foundry division, said during Korea Premium Week 2026 that the company now expects the number of customers for its foundry business to grow by 4x come 2029, compared to the customers it had in 2017.

She further added that the number of customers has already increased by threefold from when the foundry business was established as an independent unit in 2017.

To ensure that it brings in a lot of new customers, Samsung foundry is working to diversify its portfolio of offerings, which are currently focused on mobile products, to focus more on AI and high-performance computing chips. High-performance computing only accounted for 5% of the foundry business in 2017 but it has since increased to 28%. She expects that this share will reach 66% by 2029.

As a way to maintain competitiveness in this market, Samsung now plans to begin mass production of its third-generation 2nm process in 2028, with mass production of its 1.4nm process slated for 2029.
