TL;DR

  • AMD CEO Lisa Su is expected to visit South Korea next month for high-level meetings with Samsung Electronics leadership.
  • AMD and Samsung may finalize details of their earlier MoU on AI memory chips and computing technology.
  • Samsung could become AMD's priority HBM4 supplier, with volume, price, and delivery terms potentially being set.

South Korea is the place to be for any company that requires memory chips and other advanced semiconductor solutions. Two of the world's largest memory suppliers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are based there.

AMD CEO Lisa Su is expected to visit South Korea next month, and high-level meetings are planned with top executives at Samsung Electronics.

The finer details of the MoU may now be worked out

AMD has been courting Samsung for some time now. Earlier this year in March, AMD signed an MoU with Samsung for cooperation on AI memory chips and computing technology. It was reported at that time that Samsung had been selected by AMD as the priority supplier of HBM4 chips for AMD's AI accelerators.

During Su's upcoming visit, meetings are expected with the chief of Samsung Electronics, other top leadership, as well as CEO's of local companies working in the neural processing unit segment.

It's possible that there may now be further progress on the MoU that was signed between the companies earlier this year. The finer details for priority HBM4 supply, including volume, price, and delivery schedule, may be finalized. Once the supplies begin, Samsung will be able to book in a significant amount of revenue from the chips that it supplies to AMD.
