Reason #1: Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 for its refined design

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 looks almost the same as the Flip 7, except Samsung has made it even thinner and lighter.

  • Galaxy Z Flip 7 dimensions: 166.7 x 75.2 x 6.5mm / 85.5 x 75.2 x 13.7mm.
  • Galaxy Z Flip 8 dimensions: 166.9 x 75.4 x 6.1mm / 85.7 x 75.4 x 13.1mm.

The new Flip 8 is also about 8 grams lighter. It weighs 180 grams, down from 188 grams.

How has Samsung managed to achieve a thinner profile and a lighter phone? It may have something to do with the second reason you should consider getting the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

Reason #2: Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 for new battery tech

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the two Fold models unveiled at Unpacked in London are Samsung's first phones to feature new Silicon-Carbon (Si-C) battery technology.

More specifically, the Flip 8 uses a Li-Ion battery with a Si-C anode, which delivers a higher energy density.

In theory, Samsung had three options:

  • Leverage the battery's higher energy density to increase capacity without making the phone thicker.
  • Keep the same 4,300mAh capacity while making the phone thinner and lighter.
  • Make the phone even lighter by using a battery smaller than 4,300mAh.

Samsung chose the second option. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 retains its 4,300mAh battery, but the denser Si-C cell allowed Samsung to make the phone thinner and lighter.

Reason #3: Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 for its SoC

Samsung did something unusual last year when it released its first Galaxy Z Flip model equipped with an Exynos chip. Even in the USA, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 launched with the Exynos 2500 SoC.

This year, Samsung went back to the old approach, at least in the USA, and announced the Galaxy Z Flip 8 with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

In general, many Samsung fans prefer Qualcomm's Snapdragon “for Galaxy” chips over Samsung's in-house Exynos solutions. The fact that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 returns to Snapdragon is reason enough for some existing Flip owners to trade up.
