Samsung has announced support for American Express (AMEX) card in Samsung Wallet in South Korea. In select markets outside of Korea, support for AMEX cards was already available.
Starting today, AMEX cards can be used for overseas payments on Galaxy smartphones and smartwatches. At launch, this feature is limited to AMEX cards issued by Samsung Card, but support for cards from other issuers is expected to roll out soon.
South Korean Samsung Wallet users can make payments using all three major global card networks: AMEX, Mastercard, and Visa. This eliminates the need to carry physical cards, as payments through Galaxy phones are accepted at NFC-enabled point-of-sale terminals.
AMEX is widely used across Asia, Europe, and North America and is especially popular among high-income customers. These cards often provide premium benefits through partnerships with airlines, hotels, restaurants, and other services. By adding AMEX support, Samsung aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Samsung Wallet.
Chae Won-cheol, Vice President and Head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung MX, said, “With the addition of support for international payments using AMEX cards, we plan to enhance the global usability of Samsung Wallet and provide differentiated services for premium card users.”
