Apple has reportedly been working on a foldable iPhone for years. And according to several reports, the first foldable iPhone will launch in the second half of next year. It will reportedly have three things in common with Samsung's impressive Galaxy Z Fold 7.
According to a report from Bloomberg, the first foldable iPhone (codenamed V68) will largely look like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 due to its overall form factor. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the foldable iPhone is said to feature the following things:
Previous reports claimed that the foldable iPhone has a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 6.8-inch foldable screen. Apple appears to have adopted a form factor that Samsung has perfected over the years. This shows that Samsung has been right all along about the basic form factor of a foldable smartphone.
OPPO and Google initially used wider and shorter screens in their first foldable phones, but later reverted to Samsung-like tall cover screens with newer models. Vivo experimented with two in-display fingerprint readers (one for each screen) in the X Fold 3 Pro, but later switched to a single side-mounted fingerprint reader in the X Fold 5.
The foldable iPhone is also said to feature Apple's second-generation 5G modem (C2). The device is also said to feature in-cell touch sensors, which will make the screen better to look at. It will also reportedly use a laser-drilled metal plate that will make the foldable display's crease less visible. This technology will reportedly also be used in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 next year.
So, compared to the foldable iPhone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will have bigger screens, a better camera setup (likely featuring three rear cameras), and a similarly crease-free display. Apple will likely bring more apps optimized for the foldable screen, though.
The foldable iPhone will could be priced at $2,000 or above. So it will be interesting to see if Samsung drops the prices of Galaxy Z Fold phones next year or brings more advanced features while staying with the current pricing. The South Korean firm is also expected to announce its first tri-folding phone later this year.
