The Audio Engineering Society (AES) has selected five papers submitted by Samsung for its esteemed yearly “Top 10” list of innovations. One of the papers picked by AES was authored by Samsung Research (SR) Visual Technology Team, while the other four submissions came from Samsung Research America (SRA)'s Audio Lab.

The four papers that were picked by AES from SRA's submissions are:

  • “Application of AI Techniques for Nonlinear Control of Loudspeakers.” It proposes a novel approach that uses a neural network to combat distortion caused by the motion of a loudspeaker's diaphragm.
  • “Deconvolution of Room Impulse Responses From Simultaneous Excitation of Loudspeakers.” This paper proposes a method of measuring several loudspeakers in a room simultaneously. It reduces measurement time by a factor of ten compared to traditional room equalization.
  • TVs have become slimmer, and this design choice poses real physical limitations to the development of certain audio technologies. SRA's paper titled “Transducer Design Considerations for Slim TV Applications” proposes to overcome these limitations by using a new layout of a moving coil transducer.
  • SRA is researching the best audio codec for HDR10+ and wrote a paper titled “Bitrate Requirements for an Audio Codec for Stereo, Surround and Immersive Formats.” The accolade-winning paper suggests that the Opus codec is an excellent choice for HDR10+, and proposes a new stereo pairing scheme to add support for 7.1.4 content in Opus with joint stereo encoding.

In addition to these four submissions, a fifth paper from Samsung Research (SR) was picked by the Audio Engineering Society to complete the Top 10 list of the year. It concerns the increased consumer bias towards OTT (over-the-top) devices, and proposes a new 3D immersive audio codec capable of supporting a variety of spatial audio formats and loudspeaker layouts used in OTT environments.
