Samsung and Apple inevitably end up being pitted against each other, such is the outsized shadow the two behemoths cast on the global electronics industry. So comments about either company from their executives tend to get noticed, because they give us a peek at their thought processes as they take on these challenges.

Samsung has gone all in on AI this year and we're seeing it sprinkle the AI fairy dust on a variety of its products, ranging from smartphones to home appliances. According to Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and co-CEO Han Jong-hee, therein lies the secret sauce that will help Samsung leave Apple far behind.

Samsung has an edge that Apple doesn't

Samsung Electronics co-CEO Han Jong-hee has expressed confidence that the company's home appliance division will deliver stellar performance this year due to the enhanced product portfolio as well as significantly improved connectivity with mobile devices. He's been leading Samsung's home appliance division since 2022 and is focused on increasing the division's profitability.

This is an area where Apple lags, because while it does ship tens of millions of iPhones, it doesn't make home appliances and can't thus provide the kind of seamless connectivity that you get with a Samsung phone and appliance.

Han pointed out that Samsung can provide improved connectivity because of its leadership in TVs and smartphones. This will help make users' lives easier and also make it simpler for them to interact with smart home devices.

“We value the connection between the products we make, and if we do this well, I think we can compete with Apple,” Han said, adding that “Who knew that Apple would have a hard time because it is not good with AI?”

He also dropped hints that Samsung is going to introduce generative AI based on an LLM to Bixby later this year, making the connection between Samsung's home appliances and its electronic devices even more sophisticated.

The Galaxy experience can be messy for first-time users

Some say it's always better to have more options, but it's never as clear-cut as it sounds. This design philosophy doesn't always work, and more importantly, it isn't a magical shortcut that can patch everything up and always lead to a better user experience. On the contrary, if not handled properly, I believe the “more […]

Buying a low or mid-range Galaxy phone is getting confusing again

A few years ago, Samsung went on a crusade to abolish the confusopoly it inadvertently created by offering too many choices in the low and mid-range Galaxy phone market segments. The company disposed of the Galaxy J series and simplified things. It focused solely on a few Galaxy A models, and in markets such as […]
