Meta is removing Chromecast option from Quest headsets

Meta’s Quest VR headsets allow people to mirror the content that these devices show on the internal displays to Chromecast-equipped devices. The company, unfortunately, seems to be removing the ability to do so.

According to a new report from Android Central, Meta is removing the support for Chromecast from Quest VR headsets with a software update that carries the build number (firmware version) 60.0, which was rolled out last month. The change is especially evident on the Quest 3 headset, with many owners on Reddit reporting that they are not able to find the Chromecast devices in their homes under the casting menu on the headset.

This doesn’t seem to be a software or hardware-related issue either, because the official documentation now says “Chromecast is not fully supported with Meta Quest.” Furthermore, Meta says that if you want to mirror the content from your Quest headsets to an external display (such as a Chromecast device), you have to cast the feed to your smartphone or a computer, and then mirror that device’s screen to a Chromecast device.

Reportedly, the change affects only primary accounts, with the option to mirror the feed on Chromecast devices popping up on other accounts on the headset. At the moment, there’s no information about why Meta is making this change. Some people suggest that the company is doing so because the functionality to cast feed from the VR headset to Chromecast devices doesn’t work properly as it crashes and freezes now and then.
