ASUS makes some good small phones that pack good processing capabilities and features. Although it has yet to make a mark in the smartphone market, ASUS has a wide range of patents that help the company make revenue. In a recent development, ASUS sued Samsung for the violation of its 4G/5G wireless communication patents.
According to the latest report by DigiTimes, ASUS has sued Samsung because it violates its wireless communication patents targeting 4G/5G smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5. This step was allegedly taken by ASUS since it did not reach an agreement regarding licensing fees for its patents with Samsung.
Recently, ASUS formed ASUS Technology Licensing and Innovative Sonic Limited, which owns all of the company's patents. This is the same company that has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the Eastern District of Texas over a single wireless communications patent (U.S. Patent No. 10,187,878). This patent is described as a “method and apparatus for improving a transmission using a configured resource in a wireless communication system” and covers a lot of 4G and 5G smartphones.
As per RPX Insight, this patent is a standard essential patent, and typically such types of lawsuits take years to get to a conclusion. Moreover, even if the court obliges Samsung to pay for the violation of ASUS' patents, it won't make ASUS' smartphone business profitable.
