The Galaxy Note hype remains unbeatable despite Samsung’s best efforts

Almost three years have passed since the last H2 Unpacked event that hosted a Galaxy Note series took place. And so far, it doesn't feel like Samsung's foldable phones have parallelled the Galaxy Note brand in terms of their ability (or lack thereof) to generate pre-Unpacked hype. If the rumors are true, we're only two months away from Samsung's next big launch event, but for the moment, it doesn't feel like something big is coming.

In theory, Samsung's foldable phones are much more technologically superior and exciting than the Galaxy Note series. No matter the shipment figures, the foldable display, as a technology, was in development for a decade before it became commercially available. And needless to say, foldable displays were a much more complex puzzle than the S Pen.

Everyone wanted this foldable display concept to become a reality, but despite all the wait, the hype around foldable devices doesn't feel like it topped Galaxy Note levels just yet. And as a new H2 Unpacked event draws near every year, we at SamMobile are probably more aware of this discrepancy than anyone else except perhaps Samsung itself.

It used to be that hype levels in the media were through the roof months before a new Galaxy Note device got unveiled. Nowadays, it doesn't feel the same. And although the first Unpacked event of the year still is an exciting affair, the media, as a whole, doesn't seem very excited over Samsung's foldable phones that took over the H2 Unpacked events from the discontinued Galaxy Note series. There's not much to report on and discuss, and Samsung doesn't seem to be spending much marketing money on promoting its premium foldable phones pre-Unpacked.

There's still time for Samsung to stir up some hype, but will it?

Rumors say Samsung may unveil the next foldable phone series on July 26 at an Unpacked event at COEX in South Korea. More so, Samsung is supposedly planning to unveil a new Galaxy Watch series and, possibly, a new mixed-reality headset alongside its next-gen Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5. But for whatever reason, people and the media don't seem as excited as they used to be when a new Galaxy Note was on its way.

Perhaps Samsung is way more successful now at preventing some of its H2 Unpacked affairs and devices from leaking. Therefore, there may be less information the media can talk about before Unpacked, and thus there's less of a build-up leading up to the event. Preventing leaks can have a negative effect if your products don't blow expectations out of the water.

Or perhaps Samsung failed to make foldable phones as exciting as the Galaxy Note series used to be, which isn't something anyone would have foreseen half a decade ago when most people believed foldable phones were to become the next leap in the smartphone's evolution. Who would've thought the S Pen could beat foldable display technology, under-panel cameras, and meticulously crafted hinges in the hype department?! But so far, foldable phones can't seem to be able to hold a candle to the hype levels Galaxy Notes used to reach ahead of Unpacked.

But there's still hope. In theory, there's still time for Samsung to start hyping up its upcoming foldable phones with teaser ads and clever marketing. According to early leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 may not be all that exciting, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is shaping up to be a worthy sequel. Now, whether or not the company will do that and spend the money to promote its products leading up to Unpacked is to be determined. It probably could, but so far, it's looking like tech enthusiasts and Samsung fans may have a relatively dull summer ahead of them.
