The South Korean technology giant, Samsung, has picked up two accolades at the ‘2023 ENERGY STAR Awards' hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Samsung Electronics won the grand prize in the ‘Manufacturer Category' for the 10th time. FYI, Samsung won its first ‘Sustainable Excellence Award' in the manufacturer category in the domestic industry back in 2013 and since then has been winning it, except for 2017.

The US government evaluates over 20,000 companies and organizations for their activities and how they are implementing the Energy Star certification. It then gives the ‘Energy Star Awards' to companies in eight sectors, which include manufacturing, energy management, and retail.

The ‘Sustainable Excellence Award', which is the top award in the manufacturer category, is then given to companies that have excelled in environmental protection and energy saving. Since Samsung has been awarded the ‘Sustainable Excellence Award' twice or more, it was recognized as the ‘Partner of the Year'.

Samsung has added a bunch of new energy-efficient products, such as washing machines, dishwashers, and air purifiers. It picked up Energy Star certification for 474 products in the US in 2022, which is a 24% increase compared to the previous year. Samsung's SmartThings energy service, which allows real-time monitoring and management of energy consumption of devices, is also Energy Star certified.

Samsung Electronics also received the top prize in the ‘Energy Management Division'. This award was given to the company for its praise-worthy efforts in improving the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through company-wide power management programs.

To give you some numbers, Samsung uses 100% renewable energy in its business sites across the US and reduced energy consumption by 4.7% compared to the previous year. It expanded the number of Energy Star-rated buildings from 6 in 2021 to 12 in 2022. Samsung is also aiming to further reduce the average energy consumption by 30% across seven major electronics products including smartphones, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, ACs, PCs, and monitors by 2030.
