Galaxy S23 should be the most durable non-rugged phone to date

The Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra are bound to become the most durable non-rugged smartphones ever created by Samsung. They use the same armor aluminum material for the frame as last year's models, boast the same IP rating for dust and water resistance, but feature a new generation of Gorilla Glass protection.

Some skeptics last year believed that “Armor Aluminum” is just a buzzword. But marketing blurb or no, every Galaxy S22 durability test proved that the flagship trio was built like a tank.

This year, the Galaxy S23 series uses the same “Armor Aluminum” material for the frame. And since the new flagships more or less have the same design as last year's models, we expect them to pass durability tests with flying colors – even more so now that they boast better glass protection.

Armor aluminum, IP68, Gorilla Glass Victus 2

The aluminum Samsung uses for the Galaxy S23 frame is more resistant to scratches and drops than the previous solutions. The Galaxy S22 was the first Samsung phone to use it, and it proved its mettle.

The Galaxy S23 series also has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. This rating indicates that the Galaxy S23 won't have any issues in dusty environments and should survive for 30 minutes in up to 1.5 meters of water. Saltwater is another matter, so you shouldn't go swimming in the ocean with your Galaxy phone regardless of the IP rating.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 claims to have the same scratch resistance as the previous generation while offering better protection against drops. Corning developed Victus 2 specifically to have a higher resistance to drops on hard surfaces, such as concrete pavement. The latter is the most common material in urban environments, so it made sense for Corning to develop a solution that would withstand drops on concrete.
