The iPhone Air might not be getting an upgrade this year. Instead, Apple is expected to launch the ultra-thin phone's successor in 2027. The iPhone Air 2 will reportedly be thinner, have better cameras, and longer battery life. And Samsung's OLED technology could help it achieve two of those things.

A report from TheElec claims that the iPhone Air 2 will use Samsung Display's OLED panel with Colour filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology. This technology replaces polarising plates in an OLED panel with colour filters. It also replaces a standard Pixel Define Layer (PDL) with a black PDL.

The removal of polarizing plates increases light transmittance, which means the display can emit the same amount of light without going as bright as earlier, thereby reducing power consumption.

Moreover, the removal of the polarizer layer also makes the OLED panel thinner than earlier. So, an OLED panel with CoE technology is thinner, brighter, and consumes less power. And the iPhone Air 2 will reap all those benefits.

While Apple will be using this technology for the first time next year, Samsung's foldable smartphones have been using CoE OLED panels for a few years. It was first used in the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The company will even bring it to bar-shaped phones this year, starting with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
