Samsung Experience (Oreo) vs One UI (Android Pie) in screenshots

Samsung’s main goals with One UI are to make sure users can see important information at a glance and easily access various actionable elements with one hand, and One UI also brings a number of visual changes as a result. It’s one of the biggest upgrades to Samsung’s proprietary Android user interface we have seen, with a number of new features and functionality added as well.

We’ve already covered many of those new features, and with the stable Galaxy S9 Android Pie update now available in a number of countries, Samsung pretty much has the final version of One UI ready for public use. And we thought this might be a good time to put some screenshots together to show our readers how One UI compares visually to the Samsung Experience UX on Android Oreo.

There are plenty of visual changes on One UI, from something as small as the placement of the clock in the status bar to major aspects such as the notification shade and app icons. Not everyone is going to like all these changes, which is fine, but some of you may change your mind seeing both Oreo and Android Pie screenshots side by side.

So go ahead and check out the screenshots below; the Android Pie/One UI version is on the right in each screenshot. Wondering if your Galaxy smartphone will be updated to Pie? Check out our dedicated Android 9 Pie page!

How is the performance of the One UI, does it tends to get sluggish after some time like the older TouchWiz. I have refrained from using Samsung devices after my experience with S4. Right now I am using OnePlus but if the performance of One UI is good then I’m thinking about getting S10.

i hardly recommend everyone NOT to upgrade to Pie. It is one of the ugliest UI ever. the worst for me are those curved HUGE “windows”. everywhere is a huge radius. if u click on settings everything is way too big nothing fits to each other. the proportions are totally nonsense.
the messages u get in the lockscreen look super ugly. seems like totaly out of place.
no beautiful simple straight lines. it looks like a 12 year old boy/girl did the work for them. Right now i am downgrading to Oreo again and i so hope it works out well.

I would like to see how custom themes looks on the Pie. Does Oreo themes just transfer over?

So far after using it for about a week I can’t say i like it over oreo yet. The icons are ugly and I’m missing features like pinning and unpinning the navigation bar (which forces me to use gestures which I don’t like!) Neither can the white edges around apps be removed anymore. It also doesn’t feel like they made any changes under the hood. There are still many frame drops in the ui which they didn’t addres at all. They are still there at the exact same stress points. Oh and the search bar in the app drawer has… Read more »

In the phone dialer, device care and some other pages the 3 dots are too high for 1 hand use.

RIP good old Samsung font. 🙁

Not sure u are joking or just stupid enough to say such thing here…You know u are using android right? And basically can have any font you want. Samsung made a great job , so many improvements in Pie and you cry about the font…

Linkyop

I can say anything about that, i don’t care you have to say. It’s my opinion, so get lost.

Wonder who made you registration to comment here… Learn how to use google next time before talk bs. Seems like u barely understand what is going on here…Whole new OS and you say rip Samsung font… lol

I will say what i want. 🙂 I don’t like new font, Nougat/Oreo is way better.

And again, i don’t care what you have to say.

@Linkyop try to understand what @meifistoreyon is saying, you can change the font to whatever you want. Its android you can do anything. Have a nice day bro

I say it the wrong way I guess. This is also was my point. Android is amazing, you basically can change everything the way you like it. They missing the big picture here. Samsung provided us whole new interface with a bunch of optimizations, faster and smoother new android os….And people say hate the font and the icons…Which obviously sound ridiculous. And I even though those are apple fans which come here to troll us because I can’t explain it another way. I love everything, I don’t use stock fonts I use ComicSansMS. There is an app that can convert… Read more »

New One UI is ideal for low visioned pepole. Corners are too much rounded, looks ok for S series but not for Note series. It has lost the classic and clean feeling. Not intuitive as Samsung UX. Feeling of an incomplete ui like Chinese oem. Time has come to move to Oxygen OS.

hello Abhijeet , how did you get the screen recording toggle?

nycundrgrnd

Let me be 100% HONEST…the need for the OneUI is ONLY necessary because phone proportions have gotten way out of hand. If the WHOLE top THIRD of my screen must be rendered DEAD SPACE then clearly the push for these elongated ingot phones have gone too far. Now I don’t mind a consistent UI across all elements or even the native dark theme. But the core of why OneUI exists is to address the hubris of these elongated alien phones.

The interface is terrible. Icons are ugly. Half the screen wasted. No video button in Camera.
Please, remove Samsung One UI and return to the look of Oreo who was amazing.

This is a horrible move by Samsung. The interface is terrible. Icons are ugly. Half the screen wasted. No video button in Camera. A child can do better than this.

I like the new interface but they should make an option for us to change the icons, fonts, nav bar and AOD back to Oreo design as the new design is so horrible.

mefistoreyon
mefistoreyon

You can change the icons from the theme store.

GS7edge
GS7edge

We can’t change the icons back to Nougat and Oreo icons in the theme store as those icons are not available in the store.

May you kindly provide the screenshots (or a screen recording clip) of One UI with “gpu rendering profile” shown as “on-screen bars” activated in dev options (and compared to oreo if possible)? Any UI can look as good as you want but it would be wasted if it comes without decent (aka lighting fast for any flagship phone) performance and optimization. Thanks 🙂

I won’t be going to Pie if I can’t hide the navigation bar.

Biransahin

My wife said the same! But she started using the swipe from the bottom option with no navigation bar at all and she’s liking it more as it’s a permanently full screen display. It does look good in my opinion. Even better than having the nav bar popping up and down. For me, it’s list view of open apps that I’d miss the most.

If they can allow for the status bar to disappear too then I’ll be over Pie like a puppy dog on ice cream. 😁

I wish they would bring back the navigation bar that hides until you bring it up like in Oreo. I wish they would make ClockFace app work again and NavStar too!! Both stopped working after beta ZRKA. Hello SamSung are you reading this??

Biransahin

I haven’t got it yet as I’ve got Note9 but wife said the same thing on her S9 plus. She changed the buttons to the swipe from the bottom option and she’s happy using that now. Might be worth trying for you. The thing I’ll miss is the option to have list view of the open apps as it seems to be gone….correct me if I’m wrong, but I couldn’t find that option.
