Samsung did see a resurgence in another key market, Great Britain, where the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy J3 (2016) are said to have performed particularly well.
The company's market share in the United States was 35.2 percent for the three months ending August 2017. Samsung only saw a growth of 0.8 percentage points year-over-year. On the other hand, Apple tied with Samsung by maintaining strong sales momentum just one month before the iPhone 8's launch.
Apple grew its market share by 3.7 percentage points year-over-year to 35 percent, ending up in a tie with Samsung's 35.2 percent. According to the report, Samsung was hurt by weaker sales through Verizon which is the country's largest carrier. Apple approached a 50 percent share within Verizon.
Samsung took advantage of the weeks before the iPhone 8's launch in Great Britain. It launched new promotional activities that helped drive its overall share to 38.4 percent, a three-year high. More than one in four Galaxy S8 buyers mentioned a specific promotion as being a vital influencer for their purchase. Apple's flagships lost momentum in the same period ahead of the iPhone 8 launch in September.
