Exclusive: Samsung’s next smartwatch is codenamed Solis, runs Tizen

The Gear S2 is the closest the industry has gotten to a perfect smartwatch. Samsung took a fair amount of time developing the Gear S2, opting to make things as good as possible instead of rushing out the door yet another smartwatch to add to its repertoire. Well, the company isn’t done yet – we have learned that the company is working on a new smartwatch, codenamed Solis.

The literal meaning of Solis is sun in the Spanish language, which is as good a hint as any that the smartwatch will have a circular display (the Gear S2 was codenamed Orbis, which means orbit, see what Samsung is doing here?). Well, not that Samsung would ever go back to rectangular displays for their smartwatches – no one wants their smartwatch looking like someone strapped a mini computer to their wrists, and a classic watch-like design and the rotating bezel for navigation are a great match.

The model numbers for Solis will be SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770, SM-R765V, and SM-R765S (the last two should be carrier variants). We can also confirm that the smartwatch will run Tizen (sorry, Android Wear fans) and come with an updated user interface. We don’t have any specs for the upcoming watch yet, but we can only assume it will be better than the Gear S2 in many aspects. A larger display option would certainly be great to see, as the Gear S2’s 1.2-inch display can be a tad too tiny when you have to use the touchscreen instead of the rotating bezel.

What do you think Samsung should offer with their next smartwatch? A larger display, longer battery life, more functionality, or something else? Sound off in the comments, and rest assured we will be bringing you more information on what could be the Gear S3 as and when we get new details.

proper GPS for fitness tracking, better fitness app, larger display and an always on display at least like my Garmin Fenix HR, that actually look like a normal watch when is on AOD, and not with a watch that cost like 50$ , the battery of my garmin fenix 3 hr lasts at least 4/5 days and i do a lot of fitness tracking and have amazing watch faces that are always ON

For me, the two biggest improvements that would make me ditch my AW watch and go with the Samsung offering is 1. add GPS proper sports tracking, 2. better water resistance (let me go for a swim and not have to worry about it), and, 3. addition of a speaker so I could receive calls directly from the watch if I want to.

The 3G model already has GPS and all variants have IP68 meaning it’s pretty water proof for 1m depths for 30 minutes or something. Dunking in and out of water (swimming strokes) are fine. I guess it jus doesn’t have a speaker that you require.

I’ve heard about this in a YouTube video, and I understood he said Soulless instead of Solis. Oops… Sorry about that.

Larger display (G-shock)

The Tizen on Samsung’s smartwatches need more apps. The watch can be very well designed and everything, but without apps it is not so smart.

The biggest problem with the S2 was S Voice – it just did not work. If Samsung allowed us to choose between S Voice and Google Voice, that would be great.

Another thing I don’t like about my Gear S2 is that the bezel is annoyingly difficult to rotate with dry fingers.

I’ll go along with the bigger display, easy to read and operate = win, a big battery would be nice to, perhaps more band options might be nice to.
And keep the rotating bezel control, that is super cool.

Lighter and thinner, please!

Larger display. Gear S2’s dial is small. Atleast 2inch display will be good. I didn’t buy the S2 for this reason.

nah, 2″ is too big. The original Gear S has 2″ screen and it even curves around your wrist. The S3 cant be that big and it cant be bent either.

Yay finally the Gear S3 rumour is coming up!!

Some of *my* wishlists fpr the S3:
-Bigger screen (1.37″?) with no black bezel surrounding it (like on Gear S2)
-Speaker + GPS all models
-Strong vibration motor
-Bigger battery

Does anyone agree with me?? *I have the Gear 2 and skipped the S2 cause of the first 3 reasons..*

I just want them to give us some things they already promised. More apps, and samsung pay. Maybe a tad bit larger display.

I’m totally fine with a bigger display – 1.5 inches may be – and a much larger battery equaling a much longer battery life, too.
