Samsung reportedly supplying OLED displays for Apple Watch, paving the way for AMOLED on future iPhones

A report out of Korea today claims that Apple is diversifying the supply chain for its first smartwatch by sourcing OLED displays for the Apple Watch from Samsung. LG Display was previously said to be the only supplier for the Apple Watch’s display and it was said that Apple would stick with the company till the second-generation Apple Watch but if today’s report is to be believed Samsung is now in the mix as well.

Ever since the first iPhone was released in 2007 the smartphone has made use of LCD technology in all models but today’s report also claims that Samsung is providing OLED panel samples to Apple which might pave the way for AMOLED displays to arrive on future iPhones. Apple is said to be testing these OLED panels from Samsung and is expected to make a decision next month about whether or not it wants to stick with LCD for the next generation smartphone or move to OLED. Apple rarely comments on supply chain related matters so it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get a confirmation from the fruit company on this, Samsung has not yet commented on the matter as well.

Apple loves to boast that they invented the greatest smartphone. But in fact there were many other smartphones on the market that are more advanced than iphones. For example, the screen resolution on their ‘greatest’ iPhone 6s Plus is only 1080p.Most flagship smartphones released nowadays at have a QHD Resolution display.Next, the Iphone camera on the 6s is merely 12MP,lower than some mid range smartphones which has a 16MP camera.NFC on the iphone 6S is also limited to Apple Pay,which is a waste.Apple could have fully utilised the components instead of just limiting them to certain features.

The phone that put apple on the map was the iPhone 4. Which was basically a CLONE of the LG Prada. Released in 2007 and has won several awards.

I don’t think this was so at launch. But LG Watch screens had huge issues and along with failed Taptic Engines contributed to less than a fourth of pre-orders actually going through as recorded sales! …..it’s going to be easy to figure out, after Apple announces it’s 4th Quarter fiscal annual report and no mention of Apple watch sales numbers are made public. Because if they’d actually sold over 4.5 million claimed watches at an average of $500 each in 4th quarter earnings, that would equal well over 2.5 Billion in Apple Watch sales in the 4th quarter alone! ……and… Read more »

Once Apple starts using Amoled, the media will go wild, claim they not only invented the technology but they’re the only ones using it, and after that point, everything other display technology will be considered junk.
