The Galaxy Z Flip 3 ticks most of the boxes. It has a great design, respectable specifications, great software and a decent foldable display. It's great value at its reduced price tag. However, there's one reason that makes me wish I hadn't bought the device at all.
Samsung has used high quality materials for the construction of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The entire device is covered with glass. It feels very nice and premium to the touch and it also elevates the appearance of its color options. It also makes the device very slippery.
Now that's not going to be a problem for those who use the device with a case, which I suspect a lot of people do. There's always the concern that a foldable smartphone won't be as tough against bumps and drops as a “regular” phone. So one can expect that customers who buy the device will invest a bit more money into a strong case for their Galaxy Z Flip 3.
There will be some who won't and I'm one of them. I've never been too keen on hiding my phones behind cases. That's not because I've never dropped a phone in my life, believe me, there are quite a few broken units in my drawer, but because I prefer not hiding the color I chose and being able to experience the build quality every single time I pick up the device.
Using a case with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was always out of the question for me. I wasn't about to hide that gorgeous green color that I decided on after three days of comparing every single color. I also didn't want a plastic or leather case preventing me from experiencing the perfect marriage of metal and glass that is the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
I've used Samsung phones made out of metal and glass without a case for years now. None of them seemed to want to slip out of my hands. None of them would also slide out of my pocket if I drove over a pothole (granted, that depends on the type of garment) or even slide off my table.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is incredibly slippery. It's been requiring so much of my mental capacity now that this has legitimately made me wonder a few times why I bought the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in the first place.
Even hitting a speed bump has made it fly out of the pocket and fall under the car seat, making my heart skip a beat with every bit of contact it made with the door and seat frame on the way down.
I have to be conscious about placing my hand on the pocket when getting out of the car to make sure that it doesn't slip out and fall on the concrete, something that might prove fatal to the device. When using the device out and about, I will consciously use two hands just to feel extra safe that it wouldn't just slide out of my hand.
There have been times when I've placed the Galaxy Z Flip 3 on a book or even my wallet on top of a table. It proceeds to slide off the object gradually and hit the table with a thud that gives me more anxiety than it should. Some people have had similar experiences when placing the device on a wireless charger.
Some of you might say that I can make my life easier by just using a case with the device. To me, that feels like an unreasonable compromise. I want to be able to enjoy looking at the color I picked out. I enjoy the premium feeling and the build quality of this device. It shouldn't be compelling me to not experience the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as it was meant to be experienced.
There are some things that you only figure out after using a device as a daily driver for several months. These idiosyncrasies only become evident when the initial euphoria and novelty of a brand new device wears off.
Is this a deal breaker for me? Not in the slightest. There's still a lot more to this device that I absolutely love. I wouldn't trade it in for any other phone. That's not to say that sometimes, it does make me wish that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 wasn't so darn slippery.
