Samsung's tri-fold phone display size might not beat Huawei

Huawei got the jump on Samsung with its tri-fold phones. The Korean giant is expected to finally respond this year with its tri-fold phone that may be launched as the Samsung Galaxy G Fold. This brand name has been rumored a few times already so it hasn't been confirmed by the company yet.

The device will inevitably draw a lot of comparisons with the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate when it's launched. It may fall short in a few areas, based on the information received so far, including the size of the foldable display panel.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate folds out to a massive 10.2-inch display while the Galaxy G Fold is said to max out at 9.9-inch. It seems like a minor size difference but it's significant in the overall context of competition between the two brands.

While Samsung's offering will have the edge in chipset and other components that Huawei can't get due to sanctions on China, it may not offer charging as fast as the Mate XT Ultimate already does. A recent report had claimed that Samsung's tri-fold phone may only support 25W fast charging while Huawei's device maxes out at 66W.

These differences pop out on paper but they're not going to bother Samsung much out in the real world. Huawei's non-existent in the United States and its tri-fold phone is primarily available in China in limited quantities. So Samsung can afford to take a balanced approach because the Galaxy G Fold will virtually have no competition in its most important markets.

It remains to be seen, though, if the Galaxy G Fold gets a wider launch. Samsung will reportedly make only 200,000 units of the device so we may only see it being offered in crucial markets like South Korea and the United States.
