A few months ago, Samsung unveiled HDR10+ Advanced. It is an improvement over HDR10+ Adaptive, and brings improved colors, better local tone mapping, and AI-based optimizations to bring more out of TVs. It has capabilities that are extremely similar to Dolby Vision 2, which was also announced last year.
With this new HDR format, video content (like movies and TV shows) can be mastered at a brightness of up to 10,000 nits. Moreover, it requires TVs that have panels that support at least 10-bit colors, while the upper limit goes as high as 16-bit colors. Besides bringing enhanced brightness to TVs, the new format offers improved local tone mapping, which means filmmakers get more control over the brightness for different areas of the same frame.
HDR10+ Advanced also features genre-based optimizations, which means that TV can optimize the picture for each type of content. Filmmakers can also dynamically calculate the color gamut data for more accurate colour reproduction. It also has new metadata that helps reduce judder by allowing compatible TVs to adjust the amount of motion smoothness.
This HDR format also supports cloud-based game streaming. It then uses data from the ambient light sensor in the TV to adjust the brightness of the games in real-time. As of now, it isn't clear which cloud game streaming platforms will support HDR10+ Advanced.
HDR10+ Technologies, LLC, which is a multi-industry association, has announced that it will soon start certifying TVs that are capable of processing HDR10+ Advanced. The first TVs to feature HDR10+ Advanced include Samsung's new high-end TVs, including select Micro RGB TVs, Neo QLED TVs, OLED TVs, and The Frame series TVs, which were announced earlier today at CES 2026.
