Samsung workers not happy with wage raise, continue strike

On 8 July 2024, the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), the largest union of workers working at Samsung Electronics in South Korea, went on strike, demanding a wage rise. Last week, NSEU and Samsung decided to hold a meeting on 23 July 2024 to discuss the matter.

As scheduled, the two parties resumed wage talks on Tuesday (via Yonhap News Agency). Reportedly, Samsung offered a 5.1% increase in wages. However, the NSEU is demanding a 5.6% wage rise, a holiday on the day the union was formed, and compensation for the losses incurred by the workers due to the ongoing strike.

Currently, Samsung Electronics has a workforce of about 125,000 people. Among them, approximately 31,000 workers are part of the NSEU, about 24% of the company’s workforce. Despite a quarter of the brand’s workers going on strike, the tech giant reported only a minimal impact on production, which is quite astonishing.

This was the ninth round of talks. It would be interesting to see the resolution the two parties reach.
