Last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7 turned out to be a major hit for Samsung. It was the first time that a Fold and outsold a Flip, as the clamshells had typically remained the leader in terms of sales.
Samsung expects the new normal to continue in 2026, where the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will find more buyers in the market than the Galaxy Z Flip 8.
According to a report out of South Korea, Samsung is planning to produce more units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Z Flip 8 in 2026. If true, this would be the first time that its initial production plan focuses on more Fold units than Flip.
It's believed that Samsung intends to produce around 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 compared to between 2.5 – 3 million units of the Z Flip 8. This also suggests that Samsung expects more foldable shipments this year, as combined Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 shipments last year were reportedly around 6 million units.
This flip, for lack of a better word, works out well for Samsung. It goes to show that consumer confidence in the more expensive model has increased and that people are more willing to spend top dollar on the book-style foldable.
If it is indeed a higher margin product for Samsung, the more sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Z Flip 8 will also mean that Samsung will make more money on sales of its foldable phones this year, which is something it will definitely appreciate.
