Samsung Wallet users in South Korea have long been able to utilize their Visa and Mastercard cards to make overseas payments using Samsung's wallet app. Given that these are the two main card networks, users were pretty much covered regardless of the bank they used.

However, many also use American Express or Amex cards largely due to the great incentives they offer. It was previously not possible for Samsung Wallet users in South Korea to use their Amex cards to make overseas payments through the app, but it is now.

Amex overseas payments now possible for Samsung Wallet users

Starting today, Samsung Electronics is making it possible to make overseas payments through Amex cards that are stored in Samsung Wallet by users based in South Korea.

The implementation works just like it does for any Mastercard or Visa card. Users can simply make payments without requiring a physical card, once they've added it to Samsung Wallet.

Unlike Visa and Mastercard, not all stores across the globe accept Amex, though. So users will only be able to make payments overseas where Amex is accepted using the contactless payment option.

Support for Amex overseas payments opens up another demographic for Samsung Wallet. It's a card network that's typically preferred by high-income earners and business travelers across North America, Europe, and Asia. It also provides great benefits to customers through partnerships with hotels, airlines, restaurants, and other hospitality service providers.
