A Galaxy phone can now be a Digital Key for locking or unlocking select Audi cars without needing a physical key fob. You can even open the trunk of supported cars using that Digital Key.
This has been made possible by storing the Digital Key in the Samsung Wallet app and using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) feature. The feature uses a Galaxy phone's Ultra-Wideband (UWB) feature, which has been standardized by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC).
You don't need to worry about the security of those Digital Keys, as the data is securely embedded in the device, and the whole process passes the EAL6+ security standard.
If you happen to lose access to your phone that has your Digital Key, you can remotely lock the phone or delete the Digital Key in it via the Samsung Find service.
Digital Keys for Samsung Wallet will start rolling out this month in Europe. In other regions, the launch of the feature will align with the launch of select Audi cars.
Woncheol Chai, EVP and Head of the Digital Wallet Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “We’re excited to bring Audi drivers the incredible convenience of Samsung Digital Key, powered by advanced UWB technology and easily accessible through Samsung Wallet. This collaboration with Audi is helping to advance our vision of effortless, tech-enabled experiences within the Galaxy ecosystem.“
