Onyx Cinema LED is now shining bright at the Lamm-Lichtspiele arthouse cinema in Erlangen, Germany. It's the oldest operating cinema in Erlangen, with the first performance dating back to 1919.
Even though Samsung's Onyx Cinema LED display is a few years old, it is the world's first Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-certified cinema display for screenings. It remains state-of-the-art and vastly outperforms traditional projector-based systems.
The giant HDR Onyx display installed at the Lamm-Lichtspiele arthouse cinema in Germany measures 5.1 x 2.7 meters and has a resolution of 2048 x 1080.
The panel boasts 6.6 million light-emitting diodes that, when combined, create 2.2 million pixels. The display is based on the DCI color space and has fantastic contrast with deep blacks and a high luminosity of up to 500 nits.
“We are proud to have brought the cinema of the future to Erlangen,” said Lamm-Lichtspiele managing directors Elisa Coburger and Peter Zwingmann.
Samsung's Onyx Cinema LED display first made its appearance in the summer of 2017 at the Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul. More than 120 venues around the world now feature the technology.
