Samsung may ditch its own memory for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 entirely

Samsung has primarily used memory chips made by its semiconductor division for Galaxy devices, only relying on third-party suppliers for a fraction of the required quantity. That has changed fairly recently with Micron in particular becoming a bigger part of the supply chain.

The mobile division's reliance on Micron may increase further, as a new report claims that Samsung will now use Micron DRAM entirely for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, with its own Device Solutions division being shut out of the supply chain.

Samsung is reportedly striking a balance with its DRAM sourcing. It's exclusively sourcing DRAM chips for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, from Device Solutions. On the other hand, 100% of the LPDDR5X chips required for the Exynos 2500-powered Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be sourced from Micron.

This would be the first time that any foldable phone has memory chips from exclusively one single vendor. The mobile division's exclusive use of Micron DRAM for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is reportedly tied to heat concerns.

Given both the Exynos 2500 chipset and the LPDDR5X DRAM from Device Solutions are believed to run hot, the pairing with Micron's DRAM would likely deliver more stability for the device. It's believed that one of the reasons why Micron got a big share in the DRAM supply for the Galaxy S25 series was because of the heat problems with Samsung's own LPDDR5X chips.
