Earlier this month, we learned that Samsung may supply HBM4 chips for Google’s upcoming Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), which is an AI accelrator unit. While the South Korean tech giant confirmed that the news was not true, we are now learning that Samsung's chip-making division, Samsung Foundry, may get to manufacture Google's next TPU itself.

On X, a new report claims that Google executives visited Samsung’s semiconductor fabrication unit in Taylor, Texas, USA, to discuss how many TPUs the South Korean tech giant may be able to supply. Google has developed the TPU in collaboration with Broadcom, and it is expected to cost 80% less than Nvidia's H100 while offering a similar or better performance.

Over the past few years, Samsung’s chip-making business has been struggling to find customers. However, recently, Samsung has made many advancements in the chip fabrication division, including the development of second generation 2nm fabrication node (SF2P).

With that, it won chip-making contracts from Apple and Tesla. Soon, the brand may secure contracts to make chips for AMD and xAI as well. If Google jumps on the bandwagon, Samsung’s semiconductor chip fabrication business will flourish even further.
