Samsung has consistently led the industry in patent applications in the United States for several years now. It stamps its name on new technological innovations even if there's no immediate commercial use case.
Many of the patented products never even see the light of day, but at least Samsung keeps its options open for the future. The 2025 data shows that Samsung has once again led the industry in patent grants.
The 2025 annual patent study by IFI Claims reveals that Samsung stayed in the top spot with 7,054 patent grants. The company thus accounted for 2% of all patents granted in the United States last year.
Samsung was also granted more patents than the previous year. It led the rankings in 2024 as well with 6,377 grants, and posted an 11% year-over-year increase with 7,054 grants in 2025.
Taiwan-based TSMC, and a key Samsung rival in the semiconductor manufacturing space, came in second place with 4,194 grants. Apple, one of Samsung's main rivals in the mobile space, came fourth with 2,722 grants. It came in lower than the previous year, as the company had 3,082 grants in 2024.
The consistently high number of patents granted by Samsung show that the company continues to invest heavily in research and development activities. This strategy to diligently protect intellectual property also ensures that Samsung remains protected against any claims from patent trolls against its current or future products.
