It seems that Apple will finally ditch the notch with the iPhone 15 Pro, replacing it with an under-display camera. The camera sensor may or may not be Samsung-made, but the accompanying Face ID tech is Samsung Display's brainchild, the report says.
Similar to an under-display camera, the Face ID sensor will not be in use for the majority of the time. Hence, it will have to blend in with the rest of the display while not in operation. This requires a transparent cathode that can be tricky to manufacture.
That is why Samsung plans to work with Canada-based OTI Lumionics, which has some novel ways to make the whole contraption come to life. The tech will likely make its debut on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 later this year before Apple integrates it into its iPhones.
This time around, arch-rival LG also has some tricks up its sleeve, with its own take on under-display sensors. However, it may not be ready until 2024, giving Samsung plenty of time to iron out the kinks with its in-house tech and even field test some of it with its foldables.
