The answer, unfortunately, was not the one fans wanted: Samsung has confirmed that no Galaxy smartphone or tablet launched before the Galaxy S24 would get seven years of updates. Four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates is the maximum existing Galaxy devices will get.
What about devices that launch in the coming months and years? Well, according to a new rumor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be one of the only two book-style foldables that will get seven years of updates. The other will be Google's Pixel Fold 2, which is expected to come out later this year.
But should this be news to anyone? Not really, as while Samsung has yet to confirm anything officially, there is simply no way the company will not offer the same kind of support for an $1800 foldable as it will offer to its latest candy bar flagships, the smallest of which costs only $800 in the USA.
Should we expect similar support for the Galaxy Z Flip 6? Yes, though we would be lying if we said we aren't skeptical. Galaxy Z Flip smartphones don't come cheap, but they also aren't treated as flagships in the same vein as a Galaxy S or Galaxy Z Fold smartphone. We do think there is a high probability the Z Flip 6 will get updates for seven years, but we would refrain from considering it a guarantee for now.
