Samsung's new Galaxy XR headset is the world's first to run Google's brand-new operating system, Android XR. This time, there doesn't seem to be any One UI element to the OS. And since both the Galaxy headset and Android XR are new, neither Samsung nor Google knows much about the future support policy yet.
We tried to find out Samsung's plans for supporting the Galaxy XR headset with new firmware in the long term. In other words, how many Android XR updates will the Galaxy XR headset get over time? The answer wasn't too exciting.
Since Android XR is new, and since the Galaxy XR is the first headset to run the new OS, Samsung can't tell how long the device will be supported.
In Samsung's words, since the Android XR platform is new, the company is working closely with Google on a maintenance policy and roadmap “to deliver the best possible multimodal AI and XR experiences for our users.”
Everything likely depends on how well the Galaxy XR headset performs on the market, how high the demand will be, and how fast the technology will continue to evolve, assuming it becomes mainstream.
But right now, it's too early to determine how many OS updates Galaxy XR will receive.
If you want to be an early adopter, you can now order the Galaxy XR headset in the USA and Korea. Stateside, the headset costs $1,799 without motion controllers and other optional accessories.
