Customers expect top-tier camera capabilities from Samsung's flagship phones, and rightly so. It makes some of the most pricey flagship Android phones and has itself set an expectation that devices like the Galaxy S25 Ultra deliver the best in class of everything.
Some fans aren't too convinced, though, and they're now rallying behind a petition addressed to Samsung MX boss TM Roh that calls for an urgent change in the leadership of the camera team.
The petition lists eight different reasons as to why it's necessary to revamp the team, and that otherwise the company's reputation in mobile imaging will “suffer irreparable damage.”
It's pointed out that Samsung's flagship phones still rely on outdated ISOCELL HP2 or Sony IMX754 sensors. This reliance on outdated hardware puts the devices at a disadvantage to its competitors, particulary those from China.
Perceived lags in processing technology are also mentioned as a bottleneck to progress. The petition also claims that user feedback gets ignored, and that an apparent focus on doing basically what Apple does in terms of camera upgrades has essentially made Samsung lose its own identity.
It does suggest a solution, one that starts with replacing the leadership on the camera team. That's to be followed with a big hardware update that includes latest sensor technologies, 200-megapixel telephoto lenses, a major software and processing overhaul, and better redressal of users' complaints.
The petition has racked up nearly a thousand signatures so far and it may continue to pick up steam, but it's unlikely that Samsung will be too bothered about it. All it tells you is that there's some tension bubbling underneath the surface, but it's not going to erupt and make a major dent in Samsung's sales any time soon.
