Samsung Display workers may soon strike as wage negotiations keep failing

Samsung Display might soon have to halt operations due to a looming labor strike. The 10th round of wage negotiations “rendered no results,” say unionized workers who plan to file a request for dispute resolution with the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC).

The labor union previously put forth 26 demands, but Samsung Display accepted only two. Workers demand a wage increase, but Samsung’s management couldn’t offer more than a 2% increase.

Furthermore, union members requested an increase in payable hours of 11,000 per every 1,800 workers, but Samsung Display says the figure should be limited to 7,000 hours.

The negotiations have been in deadlock for months, and market watchers – and Samsung itself – said today that laborers might strike if nothing is resolved (via The Korea Times).

Because negotiations so far haven’t rendered any results, unionized Samsung workers are now seeing assistance from the National Labor Relations Commission to mediate settlements on wages, working hours, and employee benefits.

Should workers go on strike, it’s unclear how this would affect Samsung Electronics’ plans for the second half of the year across the TV, smart monitor, and smartphone segments. Samsung recently launched its latest Neo QLED TV lineup and is expected to release the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 later this year.
