Samsung is making a major move with its new high-end refrigerators. The company has announced that it is bringing Google's Gemini AI chatbot to its Bespoke AI refrigerators. It will significantly improve the refrigerators' food identification performance and give users more choice.
The South Korean firm's upcoming Bespoke AI series refrigerators, including the Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerators (with 9-inch AI Home screens), Bespoke AI Family Hub Refrigerator, and Infinite AI Wine Refrigerator, will feature a built-in camera, Bixby, and Google Gemini. Earlier models in the lineup only featured Bixby, which could identify up to 37 types of fresh food items and up to 50 types of packaged food items and ingredients. But with the addition of Gemini, it could identify a lot more fresh and packaged food items.
Besides packaged food labels, the built-in camera can also read text written on labels on food containers that were made by users. Then, it can add that information to the grocery list.
Samsung is also adding a new feature called AI Food Manager. It can not only identify and register food items inside the refrigerator but can also recommend recipes and help with grocery shopping, based on what is available inside the refrigerator and which items have expired or are about to expire.
The company will also expand the availability of Gemini AI to its Wine Cellar and Wine Cooler refrigerators. Such devices will also get the ‘AI Wine Manager' feature, which can help users in managing wine that requires long-term and strategic storage planning. They use the built-in camera to capture detailed wine information such as its name, classification, variety, and vintage in a list. It can also help users find where exactly a particular wine is stored.
Moon Jong-seung, Vice President of Samsung's DA division, said, “Samsung Electronics has been leading the innovation of kitchen appliances with its ‘AI Vision’ technology. Through this collaboration with Google, we will provide Samsung’s own differentiated food experience through the further evolved AI Vision.“
