Google and Samsung have been the industry leaders in the smartphone market because of their software update policies. Both started offering a promise of seven major OS updates for their new high-end phones. Now, Honor has announced that it will offer the same software update policy for its phones.

Honor will offer seven major Android OS updates for its phones

Honor has announced that it will provide seven major Android OS updates to its Magic (not Magic Lite) series phones. It will also provide regular security patches for seven years from the launch of its devices. This is similar to software support offered by Google and Samsung for their high-end phones.

This software update policy, which Honor calls the ‘HONOR ALPHA PLAN,' starts with the European Union (EU) region. The company says it is transforming from just a smartphone maker to a “global leading AI device ecosystem company,” which to us looks like a plan to tackle Samsung's wide ecosystem of devices, software, and platforms.

Honor Alpha Plan 7 Major Android OS Updates Policy Announcement

The Chinese-linked smartphone firm says its new software update policy prioritizes customer experience and encourages industry-wide adoption of longer software lifecycles. It is a strategic shift in how Honor approaches software for its devices. It will increase device longevity and reduce electronic waste, which is in line with global sustainability principles.

Honor's new policy starts with the Honor Magic 7 Pro. When the phone was announced, the company said it would provide five major Android OS updates. However, the policy has now been improved to offer seven major OS updates.

It is great to see that Samsung has started a positive shift in the smartphone industry by becoming among the first brands to offer seven major OS updates to its devices.

Recently, Samsung firm started six major Android OS updates to even its mid-range phones and four major updates to its entry-level phones. It remains to be seen if Honor can match those moves from Samsung.
