As you may have heard, the Galaxy S21 officially hit the end of firmware support earlier this year. Samsung pulled it from the support page, and unless there’s a critical security reason, no new updates are coming for the S21.

The silver lining? Samsung’s new Galaxy S26 is here, and it's a serious upgrade option. It’s especially appealing if you’re shopping in a market with a generous trade-in program, like the USA. Here’s a rundown of why swapping your S21 for the S26 is worth it.

Galaxy S26 vs Galaxy S21: Five years of upgrades, ready to pay off

Let’s start with the obvious: the Galaxy S26 looks sharper and feels sturdier. The S21 hails from a time when build quality wasn’t as much of a priority.

The S26 replaces the plastic back with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and wraps it in a stronger aluminum frame. Its flat panels and edges make it less prone to damage from drops.

Beyond its design and build quality improvements, things get even better. The Galaxy S26 is more powerful and benefits from a variety of modern features — software and hardware.

  • Display: Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X with Always On Display wallpapers.
  • Brightness: 2,600 nits, double the S21’s 1,300 nits.
  • Size: Slightly larger 6.3-inch screen (up from 6.2 inches).
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the USA/China; Exynos 2600 elsewhere (goodbye, underperforming Exynos 2100). They're both much faster than even the 2025 chips.
  • Memory: 12GB RAM standard, double the S21’s 6GB.
  • Storage: 256GB standard, up from 128GB.
  • Cameras: New triple rear system (50MP + 10MP + 12MP) with features like Horizontal Lock; upgraded 12MP front camera with AI ISP.
  • Battery: 4,300mAh (up from 4,000mAh).
  • Audio: Improved stereo speakers.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, up from Wi-Fi 6 and BT 5.0.
  • Software: Full suite of Galaxy AI and generative AI tools the S21 will never have.
  • Support: The S26 ships with Android 16 and will get up to seven OS upgrades. The S21 gets none.

All in all, the Galaxy S26 is a better phone than the S21 in virtually every way. And with support for the S21 ending, the Galaxy S26 couldn't have come at a better time.

Better yet, if you want to upgrade your Galaxy S21 to the S26 for less money, you might obtain a decent trade-in discount. In the USA, you can save $200 on the Galaxy S26 when you trade-in your S21.

Not convinced yet? Try the Galaxy S26 in person at a Samsung store if you get the chance. Side-by-side with your S21, you’ll notice the sharper design, smoother performance, and overall polish that numbers and spec sheets alone can’t capture.
