Galaxy S24 major software updates: With One UI 8 done, how many are left?

The Galaxy S24 series was the first from Samsung to come with a huge promise: seven major Android/One UI upgrades and seven years of security updates. That already makes the S24 lineup special, but what’s even more interesting is how the first two upgrades arrived.

Usually, Samsung releases one big One UI update every year, shortly after Google launches the newest Android version. But this time, things were different. One UI 7 showed up almost six months later than usual, stretching the wait for Galaxy S24 owners for their phones' first major software upgrade.

Then, Samsung suddenly sped things up. To get back on track, the company released One UI 8 in record time, the fastest of any One UI version. Google also played a role, helping Samsung move faster as part of its plan to speed up Android releases starting with Android 16.

Two down, five to go

Because of all this, the Galaxy S24 series ended up getting two major OS upgrades in the same year, which is definitely not the norm. So what happens next?

There are five more major OS upgrades left for the Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra, and S24 FE. It will be interesting to see whether future updates land on a more predictable schedule, with One UI 9 and the versions that follow hopefully sticking to a consistent yearly timeline rather than repeating the One UI 7 delay.

And before One UI 9 arrives, Samsung will also release One UI 8.5. It's a mid-cycle update that isn’t a major OS upgrade and will stay on Android 16, but will still bring notable UI changes and improvements.
