Mishaal Rahman revealed the news on Twitter, and the “Vanilla Ice Cream” codename can be spotted in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) as a series of code changes in Android's Trade Federation (Tradefed/TF). However, with Android 15 not expected until late next year, we don't know any specifics regarding new features yet.
Android has a long history of naming its major updates after desserts in alphabetical sequence. The Android 14 operating system, which goes by the codename “Upside Down Cake,” will be released by Google later this year. A lot of Samsung smartphones will get the update, but with the Korean giant's One UI skin and features on top.
For those unaware, Android's dessert-themed moniker is basically meaningless for the end user. It's nevertheless a sweet reminiscence of the early days of Android, not to mention all the lovely statues that were erected on the Google campus to mark the debut of each major Android update. Unquestionably, Android has come a long way since then, and its release cycle has been much more refined.
