Why does your Galaxy phone save 12MP images even when shooting at 24MP?

There are several reasons why not all your photos are saved at 24MP resolution.

On flagship Samsung Galaxy phones launched in 2026 and later, such as the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy Z Fold 8, the default camera app has an option to capture 24MP still images.

This new option offers a solid balance of detail, dynamic range, file size, and overall clarity. However, even if you select the 24MP setting, your phone might still save photos in 12MP resolution. Why does this happen?

Samsung explains 24MP still images are captured only within specific zoom ranges. Selecting any focal length outside these supported ranges forces the device to default to a 12MP output.

When can the camera capture 24MP photos?

24MP mode on Galaxy phones requires a camera sensor of 50MP or higher resolution. As a result, the Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26+ can capture 24MP shots using their primary camera, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra can shoot 24MP images using its ultrawide, primary, and 5x zoom telephoto cameras.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra can also capture similar images using their ultrawide and primary rear cameras.

Here are the zoom ranges supported on the different models:

  • Galaxy S26 / S26+: 1x to 1.9x zoom
  • Galaxy S26 Ultra: 0.6x (ultrawide) to 1.9x and 5x to 9.9x zoom
  • Galaxy Z Fold 8 / Z Fold 8 Ultra: 0.6x (ultrawide) to 1.9x zoom

Even within these optimal zoom ranges, supported phones require adequate processing time and ideal operating temperatures to actually process and save images at 24MP.

Why does the camera fall back to 12MP resolution?

Even within the supported zoom ranges, the phone can still fall back to 12MP capture under the following conditions:

  • Burst mode or continuous shooting: Taking images in burst mode or capturing three or more photos within a single second.
  • Close-range shots: Taking macro or close-up photos to ensure consistent focus and clarity.
  • Document scans: Scanning physical papers or documents using the built-in document scanner in the default Camera app.
  • High device temperatures: When the surface temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher due to heavy use or thermal throttling, the camera lowers output to 12MP to protect the device.
  • LED flash: Using the phone's LED flash for a photo.
  • Night mode: Shooting in low-light or mixed-light conditions. This fallback ensures higher-quality results with reduced noise and improved dynamic range.
  • Photo enhancer settings: Selecting the Balanced or Prioritize Speed options in the Camera app's Settings > Photo enhancer menu forces a 12MP resolution. You must set this toggle to Prioritize Quality to capture true 24MP photos.

These are a lot of conditions for simply capturing 24MP photos, especially for high-end Galaxy devices equipped with flagship processors, ample RAM, and fast storage.

Hopefully, Samsung will refine this feature in future software updates and relax these restrictions so users can reliably capture detailed 24MP shots in a wider variety of real-world environments.
