Samsung Display is the primary supplier of OLED display panels for the company's flagship Galaxy S series. That may change next year if the rumors are true.
Rumor has it that Samsung might just source Chinese OLED panels for the Galaxy S27. It may do that for the flagship's base model only. No such change is rumored for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
Chinese OLEDs are already used in various Samsung Galaxy devices. The Galaxy A57 relies on panels from both Samsung Display and China's CSOT. BOE has long worked on entering the Galaxy S display supply chain but that hasn't happened as yet.
A new report from South Korea claims that Samsung might consider a plan to source the OLED panels for the base Galaxy S27 from BOE. Samsung may not go BOE-only, it may source panels from both the Chinese company and Samsung Display, but dual-sourcing would enable it to bring the component price down.
It's not entirely outside the realm of possibility for this to happen. Cost optimization has been a hallmark of Samsung's mobile division under TM Roh. He has been hard at work ensuring that every bit of margin that's available to be squeezed, is squeezed.
This approach has become even more important now as memory and other component prices have shot through the roof. Samsung's mobile division isn't isolated from these price shocks. Some estimates even have the division posting an annual loss this year due to higher component prices.
The Galaxy S27 series will arrive in the midst of a memory super cycle. For Samsung to retain margins without increasing prices too much, it will have to resort to more creative methods, and that may just involve using Chinese OLED panels in the base Galaxy S27.
