Samsung may use those resources to make LPDDR5 memory chips.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that Samsung is planning to discontinue the production of its LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X memory chips by the end of 2026. That move has now been confirmed.
On Samsung Semiconductor’s official website, the product pages for both LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X now display a notice stating, “This product has been discontinued.”
Samsung is expected to repurpose the production lines previously used for LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X to manufacture newer, faster memory standards such as LPDDR5.
The shift comes amid surging demand for AI workloads, which require high-performance hardware and large amounts of memory. In particular, demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has skyrocketed, as AI accelerators rely heavily on it for processing complex tasks.
With HBM commanding higher margins, memory manufacturers are prioritizing its production over conventional mobile memory used in consumer electronics. This supply shift is also putting upward pressure on LPDDR5 prices.
By reallocating resources from older memory technologies to LPDDR5, Samsung is positioning itself to capitalize on tightening supply and rising prices in the segment.
