Ocean Mode is an exclusive feature on select Samsung devices that allows for significantly improved underwater photos by adjusting colors and enhancing clarity. The mode was introduced as part of Samsung's Coral Reef Initiative and was initially made available to oceanographers working on coral restoration.
Samsung has since made this camera mode available to more devices, and it has now received international recognition for Ocean Mode and its work on coral restoration.
Samsung's “Coral in Focus” initiative, which is powered by the Ocean Mode, has received several awards for contributions made to coral reef conservation. It also picked up the Gold in the Best Sustainability or Conservation Initiative category at the Engage for Good's 2026 Halo Awards.
A documentary tied to these efforts, titled Coral in Focus, has received the Coastal and Island Culture Award at the 23rd International Ocean Film Festival. These efforts have earned Samsung a place on Fast Company's 2026 Most Innovative Companies list for the work it's doing to advance mobile innovation in environmental research.
Through Ocean Mode and its coral restoration efforts, Samsung aims to reverse the decline of coral reefs in partnership with Seatrees, a non-profit organization based in the United States.
Samsung's Galaxy devices are being used as powerful tools, helped by features such as Ocean Mode, to bring together advanced image capturing technology with Seatrees' community-driven restoration model to bring coral reefs back to life.
