Don't cheapen the QLED brand, please.
Reading time: 2 minutes
QLED, a term that Samsung uses to signify its advanced TVs, is thrown around pretty casually by lots of Chinese TV manufacturers. The company feels that this is cheapening its brand, which is why it has now declared a media war on the supposed fake QLEDs.
Samsung has taken a jab at the fugazi QLEDs in a new video posted on its YouTube channel. It's meant to highlight that customers will only get the true QLED experience when they buy a Samsung TV.
Samsung's targeting some of its biggest TV rivals from China in this ad. Companies like TCL and Hisense have used the QLED branding for their TVs, and have even faced lawsuits for allegedly branding LCD TVs as QLEDs.
The company reiterates in this video that true QLED TVs have quantum-dot panels, a technology that the company has spent considerable resources in developing and continues to steer. A spokesperson for the company says that this ad is meant to make it easier for users to understand in a playful way “what makes a real QLED TV.”
The video goes into considerable detail about how you can identify a real QLED TV. What's surprising to witness here is that the presenter in the video is an AI character, which raises more questions than it answers, but that's beside the point here.
Will this do anything to deter its Chinese rivals from using the QLED branding however they see fit? Probably not.
