A recent APK insight post by 9To5Google reports that Google is looking to replace passwords with ‘passkeys'. This means that if it comes to fruition, you would no longer be required to enter your passwords to sign in to a web service on your Samsung Galaxy phone.

All you need to do is use available authentication methods such as passcode, fingerprint, or others, and your phone will automatically sign you in with the web service. This piece of information was revealed after folks at 9to5Google dug into the latest version of Google Play Services. In the strings of code, phrases such as “Hello passkeys, goodbye passwords” were found, hinting at their imminent arrival.

Reportedly, both Google and Apple will call this new password-replacement feature “passkeys.” The main idea behind the passkey is to remove the need to enter a password to access the web service. Instead of passwords, passkeys developed by FIDO (Fast Identity Online) utilizes cryptographic keys, and they will be securely saved on the user's device and Google account. However, you still need to remember the password for your Google account.

This feature is currently a work-in-progress. Apart from Google and Apple, companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Samsung, and others are also part of the FIDO Alliance, which has developed this technology.
