2021 was an unusual year for Samsung's smartphone market in India, as the company appears to have focused less on entry-level phones, all the while pushing 5G devices and mid-range phones priced $267-$600. At the same time, the company's foldable phones gained a lot of popularity in 2021, with shipments increasing by a whopping 388% Year-on-Year.
Samsung was the 2nd-largest smartphone brand in India in 2021 after Xiaomi. Shipments declined 8% Year-on-Year because of several factors, including supply chain issues caused by the global semiconductor shortage, as well as the absence of a Galaxy Note model.

Samsung also had fewer low-end phones on sale in India last year; however, it overtook its rivals in the 5G smartphone segment and was the largest brand in the INR 20,000-INR 45,000 ($267-$600) price range. In fact, last year, the company registered its highest-ever retail average selling price (ASP) in India. In the $267-$600 segment, Samsung had a market share of 28%.
Foldable phones, on the other hand, have grown in popularity thanks to the new generation Galaxy Z series. Samsung India recorded a 388% increase in shipments for the Fold and Flip lineups.
Overall, Samsung was the 2nd largest smartphone OEM in India in 2021, with an 18% market share. Xiaomi led the Indian market with 24%. However, in the feature phone market, Samsung maintained its lead with a 17% market share, and Xiaomi remained the 2nd-largest brand after capturing 16% of the market in 2021.
