Samsung's mobile division held on to its crown as the company with the most smartphones shipped in 2021. Counterpoints Research has found out that Samsung Electronics also emerged victorious in 2021 in another more important market; one more integral to Samsung's core business.

Samsung's semiconductor revenue skyrocketed in 2021 despite the pandemic

Samsung Electronics earned a whopping $81.3 billion in revenue out of its semiconductor business, 30.5% higher than last year's figure of $62.3 billion. We have to bear in mind that this includes a whole range of products, including mobile SoCs, IoT/low-power chips, and more. Samsung's growth was primarily driven by the sale of DRAM and logic ICs, both of which are found in just about every piece of tech.

The company out-edged industry bigwigs like Intel, SK Hynix and Micron, which generated $79 billion, $37.1 billion and $30 billion, respectively. Samsung stands to earn even more in 2022 due to increased DRAM shortages rising from the shutdown of its Xi'an plants in China. Samsung's sky-high sales figures are even more impressive when we take into account the semiconductor crunch that has been affecting the industry since 2022.

Counterpoint is of the opinion that the supply constraints afflicting the market will persist through Q2, 2022. However, others in the industry think that it could last much longer. Samsung claims that it has a contingency plan to circumvent the shortage. The Galaxy S22 series' availability should give us a rough idea about its efficacy.
