Starfield has over 12 million players, Microsoft Gaming CEO confirms

Bethesda's new space-themed RPG Starfield has more than 12 million players, revealed Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, who described the game as “a tremendous hit.”

At an event in Brazil, Phil Spencer thanked Starfield's supporters and confirmed that the game sits in the top 10 most-played games developed by a Microsoft-owned studio.

In the first week of availability, Starfield had 6 million players. In less than three weeks after the game debuted on Xbox Series consoles and PC, more than 10 million players gave it a go (via IGN).

Bethesda's new IP is a success by Microsoft's standards

Starfield is the first new IP Bethesda has worked in decades. The studio best known for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout adventured into creating a new title but didn't stray from the formula too much, for better or worse.

The game was released on September 6, and reaching 12 million players is a milestone. However, Phil Spencer didn't specify how those 12 million players are split between PC and Xbox Series consoles and how many have tried the game through the Game Pass subscription service.

Since it is available through Game Pass, Starfield can also be played on Samsung smart TVs through the Gaming Hub cloud-gaming platform. Samsung TV users in markets where Gaming Hub is available don't need a PC or console to play Starfield. However, it's unclear how many of the existing 12 million players come from Gaming Hub.
