Samsung revealed a bright new Galaxy S flagship series at Unpacked. Quite literally, the Galaxy S23 trio has Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays that should offer great outdoor visibility, and this year, the base model received a much-needed upgrade.
Although Samsung hasn't increased the luminosity of the Plus and Ultra variants, the company has created an equal playing field. This year, all three flagship models have displays that can reach the same level of peak brightness, i.e., 1,750 nits.
This is the same level of brightness that the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra achieved last year. The base S22 model was limited to 1,300 nits at the top end of the spectrum, but this year's Galaxy S23 has received the upgrade it deserved.
Peak brightness isn't all that matters
A level of 1,750 nits of peak brightness isn't the best Samsung Display can achieve. The company already manufactured brighter displays, but it seems like Samsung's mobile division opted to equalize all three Galaxy S23 models rather than giving the Plus and Ultra variants 2,000+ nits of brightness and leaving the standard S23 model behind.
This may sound a bit disappointing for prospective Galaxy S23+ and Ultra buyers. But for what it's worth, peak brightness doesn't always tell the full story. Color calibration across different brightness levels is also critical to a good user experience. If left unchecked and uncontrolled, peak brightness levels can distort colors and reduce image quality.
To counter this phenomenon, last year, Samsung introduced an improved “Vision Booster” technology that analyzes environmental brightness levels to remap the tone of the image and the screen's luminosity to deliver great color accuracy even in brightly lit environments.
Whether or not Samsung improved this technology even further with the Galaxy S23 series is unclear. But if it hasn't, and if the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra displays are anything to go by, the Galaxy S23 series displays should still offer more than optimal outdoor visibility with precise color calibration across the entire range.
