Samsung showed off countless display-based advancements at CES 2023, from new Micro LED and QD-OLED TVs to new PC monitors and the breathtaking Flex Hybrid flexible-rollable display. The company announced new technologies for increased brightness and accuracy, but eye health was also among its priorities. And to this end, Samsung showcased a new OLED panel for portable PCs, which boasts a 70% reduction in harmful blue light.

Samsung's new OLED panels for laptops claim more than 70% reduction in the blue light spectrum that can lead to discomfort and eyesight issues over prolonged exposure. The tech giant said it created its Gen 2 LBL (Low Blue Light) technology using advanced AI and the latest organic materials.

Higher brightness OLEDs with fewer health risks

Samsung's new OLED panel for notebooks can reportedly top 2,000 nits of brightness for each of the three primary colors while filtering more than 70% of the harmful blue light.

Unlike software-based blue light filters, which usually cover the entire image with a heavy yellow tint, Gen 2 LBL technology boasts a high reduction in blue light without compromising image quality and color accuracy.

Samsung Display will start commercializing and using OLED panels with Gen 2 LBL tech this year, which means new OLED-based laptops should be on the way. The brands that will use these new panels are not yet known.

Rumor has it that Apple is working on a 20-inch foldable MacBook equipped with Samsung OLED technology, and even if this foldable model won't come to pass, there's a chance that Apple will use Samsung OLEDs for future MacBooks. However, OLED MacBooks are reportedly planned to go on sale in 2024, so only time will tell which brands will take advantage of this new Gen 2 LBL OLED technology this year.
