Samsung Galaxy Ring

Introduction

Over the years, many patent applications have caused people to entertain the idea that Samsung is secretly developing a smart ring. In 2023, leaks and rumors picked up, and in early 2024, during the year's first Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung teased its first-ever smart ring for the first time.

The terminology around Samsung's first smart ring has fueled debates for a long time, ever since the first patents emerged. Samsung put all this to rest on stage at Galaxy Unpacked 2024 when it referred to this new wearable as the Galaxy Ring. It only briefly showed the Ring on the big screen but saved the details for later.

Nearly two months later, at Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Samsung surprised fans and the press with its first Galaxy Ring showcase. Samsung secured the wearable behind glass so nobody could use it at MWC 2024, but that marked its first official appearance. And that's when Samsung started opening up more and talking about the Ring's capabilities.

Design

Samsung's Galaxy Ring at MWC 2024 was made from plastic, had a concave design, came in nine sizes (5 through 13), and was finished in one of three colors: Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold.

Interestingly, Samsung said the Ring is evolving, hinting at the possibility that some design aspects could change before release. Either way, the Galaxy Ring looks the part. It has a clean finish on the outside and all the sensors on the inside.

Specifications

The Galaxy Ring will offer fitness, health, and sleep tracking similar to a smartwatch, and it will send all the data to Samsung Health via a connected smartphone.

Samsung confirmed that the ring should feature a blood oxygen sensor, skin temperature, period, heart rate, and respiratory rate tracking, as well as night movement and sleep latency tracking. The ring will also keep track of workouts and step counts but won't have GPS capabilities.

In addition, the Galaxy Ring will boast a new Vitality Score feature that uses four factors to offer personalized health insights. The Vitality Score tracker is based on metrics including Activity, Resting Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, and Sleep.

Although Samsung didn't speak about the Galaxy Ring's hardware specs, it did say that the wearable should last up to nine days on a single battery charge.

Price and Availability

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Ring at the 2nd major Galaxy Unpacked event of 2024, which should be hosted on July 10. Prices are unknown, but if Samsung doesn't use any exotic metals for the Ring, chances are it will cost less than a Galaxy Watch. Time will tell.
